These tips work for CoD, Rocket League, Roblox โ any competitive game. Apply them this week and notice the difference.
Whether you play CoD, Rocket League, Roblox, or anything else โ the fundamentals of getting better at gaming are the same. Getting better at gaming fast isn't about playing for longer hours or watching endless YouTube videos. It's about practising smarter, fixing your environment, and building the right habits. These seven tips apply to every game and every skill level.
The biggest mistake young gamers make is playing five different games in the same week and wondering why they're not improving at any of them. Skills in gaming are game-specific โ aim in CoD doesn't directly transfer to Rocket League mechanics. Pick one game, commit to it for a month, and watch your rank, score, or skill level climb significantly. Once you're satisfied, move on. Multi-gaming is fine for fun, but for improvement, focus wins.
Five hours of gaming while tired and distracted is worse for improvement than one focused hour with full concentration. When you're fatigued, your reaction time slows, your decision-making gets lazy, and you start ingraining bad habits instead of good ones. Play 1โ2 focused sessions per day, take breaks between matches to think about what just happened, and stop when you're no longer fully engaged. Quality always beats quantity for skill development.
After every loss or bad performance, ask yourself one question: "What one thing could I have done differently?" Not five things โ just one. In CoD, did you get flanked because you weren't checking your corners? In Rocket League, did you miss rotation and leave the goal open? In Roblox games, did you panic and make a poor decision under pressure? One specific lesson per session compounds into massive improvement over weeks.
Bad settings silently sabotage your progress. Sensitivity too high, motion blur on, audio set up poorly โ these things make the game harder than it needs to be without you even realising it. Before you do anything else, make sure your settings are optimised for your game. We have a dedicated CoD settings guide for PS5 and Xbox โ start there if CoD is your main game. Right settings + right practice = fast improvement.
Every good game has a training mode or equivalent โ use it. CoD has shooting ranges, Rocket League has training packs, and we have a free Aim Trainer and Rocket League Rank Checker on RespawnHQ. 10 minutes of deliberate training mode practice before a session is worth more than 10 unthinking games in a row. If you're not using the training tools available to you, you're leaving free improvement on the table.
Don't try to copy the best player in the world โ copy the player who's one rank or level above where you currently are. Watch how they position themselves, when they engage in fights, and when they hold back. The gap between you and a slightly better player is specific and learnable. The gap between you and a pro is built on thousands of hours of fundamentals you haven't built yet. Watch players at your level +1, not your level +100.
You don't need expensive equipment to improve, but the right basic gear genuinely helps. A headset that lets you hear footsteps and enemy positions clearly changes how you play CoD. A controller in good condition with no stick drift keeps Rocket League aerials precise. You don't need to spend a lot โ our best gaming headsets under ยฃ50 guide and full gear page have everything you need at sensible UK prices.
