Just started Rocket League? These are the fundamentals that every good player learned first โ explained simply.
Rocket League is one of those games that looks simple โ hit a ball into a goal with a car โ but is genuinely one of the deepest competitive games ever made. These Rocket League tips for beginners will help you skip the most common mistakes new players make and build proper foundations from day one.
Ball Cam keeps your camera locked onto the ball at all times. It's useful for tracking the ball during play, but switch it off when you're dribbling at close range or doing fancy car control. Toggle it with the button (default Y on Xbox, Triangle on PS5). Most beginners leave it on 100% of the time โ learning when to switch is your first real skill.
Boost pads are scattered all over every Rocket League arena. The small ones give 12 boost. The large corner ones give 100. Make collecting them part of every rotation โ don't drive past them for no reason. Players who run out of boost at the wrong moment lose goals. Players who always have boost win games.
Every new Rocket League player does the same thing: chase the ball wherever it goes. The problem is that chasing a ball that's already been hit means you arrive late. Instead, learn to read where the ball is going and drive to meet it. Position yourself in its path rather than running after it. This takes a few hours of conscious practice but changes everything.
You'll see amazing aerial goals in Rocket League and want to do them immediately. Resist. Ground play is what actually wins games at beginner and intermediate level. Master hitting the ball cleanly on the ground, controlling where it goes, and making solid passes before you start training aerial shots. Aerials with bad ground game = flashy but losing. Check our how to do your first aerial guide when you're ready to take that next step.
1v1 matches are brutal but they're the fastest way to improve. There are no teammates to hide behind, no one to blame โ every mistake is yours, and every win is yours. Playing 1v1 casually for a week will sharpen your ball contact, boost management, and decision-making faster than any other game mode.
Rocket League has built-in training packs that drill specific skills โ shooting, saving, passing. Go to Training โ Custom Training and search for "beginner shooting" or "bronze goalie". Five minutes of training packs before a session replaces 30 minutes of in-game fumbling. Use them. They're free and they work.
Everyone is learning. Everyone has bad games. The players who improve fastest in Rocket League are the ones who stay calm, watch their replays after losses, and think about what they could have done better. You can't control your teammates. You can control your own rotation, boost management, and positioning. Focus there.
Once you're comfortable with these basics, the next step is learning to rank up efficiently. Read our how to rank up fast in Rocket League guide for the six habits that separate Silver players from Gold and above. And use our Rocket League Rank Checker tool to track your MMR progress as you climb.
